Jones, the son of a Baptist clergyman, was born in Schoolcraft, Michigan on June 9, 1859. He attended Brown University for two years, then transferred to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and graduated from MIT in 1882. He came to Minneapolis in 1883, where he established an architectural practice in which he remained for the rest of his career.
